1.8 Enrichment activity: How does teaching and learning happen in your discipline? [± 45 minutes]

Learning outcome:

  • LO7: Outline your discipline’s approach to teaching and learning, and how it has influenced your disciplinary identity and teaching approach.

How does teaching and learning happen in your discipline?

A disciplinary identity refers to an understanding of or fluency in the discourse, methodology, practices, and research (both past and present) associated with a particular discipline (to which you belong). Part of having this disciplinary identity requires you to understand how teaching and learning happens within your discipline, as this will often exert some influence on your individual teaching approach.

To complete this enrichment activity, you are encouraged to conduct some research and collect data (from at least three resources) on your discipline’s approach to teaching and learning, effectively answering the title question. The data you collect may come in any form, including the ones listed below:

  • Video content (from YouTube or a similar source)
  • Interviews (with relevant faculty)
  • Online or physical text (journal articles, physical textbooks, etc.)

While the method through which you collect this information is not important, it is important that you think critically about your discipline, as well as your own individual approaches to and ideas around teaching and learning.

Note:

The above information around teaching and learning in your discipline, whether gathered for the purposes of this activity or previously obtained, is necessary to support your completion of the ongoing project submission at the end of this unit. You will not be able to successfully complete the submission without this knowledge.
