4.3 Enrichment activity: Using the backward design framework [± 60 minutes]

Learning outcomes:

  • LO1: Review the value and stages of the backward design framework.
  • LO2: Use the principles of backward design to create, deliver and evaluate teaching practices.

Using the backward design framework

Jay McTighe & Associates provide teachers with a number of resources that aid in the comprehension and implementation of the Understanding by Design principles and the backward design framework. One of these resources is a blank backward design template titled “UbD Unit Template (version 2.0)”. You are encouraged to use this template to design a lesson on a single introductory topic. Should you wish for further support in completing this activity, review the backward design template with descriptions, which can be found at the bottom of Vanderbilt University’s understanding by design teaching guide.

In following the backward design framework and backward design template, you should:

  • Identify the desired learning outcomes of the lesson;
  • Determine the acceptable evidence of students’ understanding of the lesson content; and
  • Plan the means by which the lesson content will be delivered.

Note:

You may use the lesson plan you create through this activity to support your completion of the online activity submission at the end of this unit. Additionally, the intention of this enrichment activity is for you to begin to actively consider and reflect on your approach to course and assignment design, which is looked at in detail in Module 6.
